IONIC and NET IONIC EQUATIONS Net ionic – an equation representing what happens to the ions in a reaction - shows what is really taking place in a reaction
3
Aqueous substances –soluble in H 2 O –Use solubility table –Write in ion form
4
Steps for writing net ionic eqns: –1. Write molecular eqn, (Don’t balance) –2. Write ionic eqn – use solubility table –3. Write net ionic eqn – cancel spectator ions Spectator ion – an ion that does not change from reactant side to product side
5
Example #1 – Sodium chloride reacts with lead (II) nitrate to form sodium nitrate and lead (II) chloride 1 – Molecular eqn 2 – Ionic 3 – Net ionic eqn
6
Example #2 – Solutions of barium bromide and sodium sulfate react together. Predict the products, write the net ionic eqn. 1 – Molecular eqn 2 – Ionic 3 – Net ionic eqn
7
IMPORTANT: Compounds that are _________ according to the _________ can ________ into _____ ONLY if __________ is present.
8
Example #3 – Sodium chlorate decomposes. 1 – Molecular eqn 2 – Ionic 3 – Net ionic eqn
9
Example #4 – Methane gas (CH 4 ) is burned in air. 1 – Molecular eqn 2 – Ionic 3 – Net ionic eqn
