The residence from where Transylvania was ruled until 1787, Brukenthal Palace is the most representative building for the new type of urban palace that Samuel von Brukenthal introduced in Sibiu city. The Palace was erected between 1778 and 1788 on several plots, being hemmed in by the neighboring buildings, having a slight irregular outlook that is different from the palaces of its time, located in open spaces. The main facade of the edifice juts out from the front line of other buildings in the square and presents a restrained Baroque style. It was renovated in the year 2007 through the efforts of Siebenbürgish-Sächsische Stiftung (München) with the support of World Monuments Fund. Thus, the Palace’s initial aspect was restored to the original white wall-painting; it was also restored the stone wall-base and a fence of stone poles with chains was set in front of the building.
