Optimizing Windows There are several ways to optimize (perform regular maintenance) Windows to keep it performing smoothly and quickly. Most of these discussed here should be done at least once per month. Deleting temporary files Windows Internet Explorer creates temporary files each time you use it, but most on the time never deletes them when you close the application. Removing IE temporary files – open IE select Tools, Internet Options under Temporary Internet files (middle of the page) click Delete Files click OK (this could take some time to complete, depending when it was last done) click OK to close the Internet Options page close IE

Scanning the hard drive for errors Over time files can become corrupt or cross linked (two files sharing the same hard drive space). Checking for file errors is a practice to do at least once every two months. Make sure all applications are close and the screen saver is turn off before proceeding open My Computer right click on hard drive C select Properties click the Tools tab along the top of the Properties page click Check Now button Select Automatically fix file system errors (box beside it should have an “x” in it) click Start this process should take about 5-10 minutes to complete

Disk Defragmenter The deletion, installation of applications and creation of files can caused the file structure on the hard drive to become unorganized. As with any filing system, they must be organized for quick retrieval. Performing a disk defragment every month can greatly improve system performance. Make sure all applications and the screen saver is turned off before proceeding click start select program files select accessories select system tools select Disk Defragmenter click start Note: this process could take up to one hour to complete depending on when it was last done or how many files or applications were installed and deleted since the last time it was run.
