Significance of Women in the 1940’s

Significance in the Home Perform household duties such as cleaning, cooking, sewing, and ironing During WWII, women at home assisted with the community efforts such as day care centers and war bonds. Housewives found themselves working harder to meet family needs Victory Gardens

Significance Outside of the Home Because of WWII, jobs for women opened up Left their old jobs and became welders, riveters, assemblers, and inspectors Women in the war were mostly assigned as nurses or clerical workers

Government and media launched campaign to get women active in the war effort by getting a job By the end of WWII, approximately 6 million women entered the labor force for the first time “Do your part, free a man for service.”
