Pg. 44 Title Page: Unit 2 Quadratic Functions We are not talking about your test from yesterday, we will talk about it Friday. Read five minutes of Harry Potter. Harry Potter Word Problem OPENING

Harry Potter and Math pg. 45 Mrs. Dursley wants to lay square foot (sod) grass in her back yard, so that her backyard looks completely normal. The Dursley’s backyard is 60 feet long and 45 feet wide. How many square feet of grass will Mr. Dursley have to buy?

Vocabulary Review Constant- a number, not a variable Variables-a letter that represent some number Exponents- a power Terms – a single number or variable or numbers and variable multiplied together. Unit 2 Title Page pg. 44: Quadratic Functions Frayer Model goes on page 47

Polynomial An expression that can have constants, variables, & exponents, but: No division by a variable Only whole number exponents  Named by their degree  Named by their number of terms  Written in standard form 5x 2 – 3x + 10 -2x 3 – 9

These notes go under your frayer model on the same page.

Degree of the Polynomial Highest (largest) exponent of the polynomial

Standard Form Terms are placed in descending order by the DEGREE. Answers will always be written in this form.

Leading Coefficient The numeric value placed in front of the exponent with the highest degree.

Naming Polynomials graphic organizer Page 47

DegreeNameExample 0Constant 1Linear 2Quadratic 3Cubic 4Quartic 5Quintic 6+6 th degree, 7 th degree, etc.. For the polynomial of one variable, the degree is the largest exponent of that variable.

Terms are always separated by addition or subtraction TermsNameExample 1Monomial 2Binomial 3Trinomial 4+Quartic Cubic binomial Constant monomial Quartic trinomial

Now you try!

Notes for Adding and Subtracting Polynomials pg. 48

ADDING POLYNOMIALS Drop the parenthesis & combine like terms

Example 1.

Example 2. x 2 + 2x – 2

Example 3. Find the perimeter of the rectangle. 10x + 12

SUBTRACTING POLYNOMIALS Distribute the negative & combine like terms
