Activity 14: Physical and Chemical Properties of Materials

Investigation Notes Testing Properties:
Light transmission: Does light pass through the material? Luster: How does light reflect off the material (is it shiny or dull)? Texture: How does the material feel? Flexibility: How easily does the material bend? Hardness: Can the material scratch glass? Reaction to Hydrochloric Acid: Does the material react with the acid?

Physical Property A characteristic observed with the senses; can be observed without changing or trying to change the composition of the substance. (EX: color, shape, length, state)

Chemical Property A characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance. Describes how a material reacts with another substance. (EX: flammability, the ability to rust)

Data/ Observations: Insert Student Sheet 14.1 “Testing Physical and Chemical Properties.” Record the groupings you have put the materials into (Procedure Step 3). Conclusion/ Analysis Questions: Answer Analysis Questions 1-4 (pg. B-17 & 18) aloud together and record in lab notebook. Notes to myself/ Exit Ticket: Which property did you like testing for the best?
