Technology: 21 st Century Learning Building a Foundation for Possibility  Historic technology budget reductions impacting the availability of technology  New advances in virtualization technology allows the district to extend the life of existing desktop infrastructure  Additionally, virtualization extends the Farmington classroom outside the boundaries of the Farmington classroom  Virtualization of sites provides built-in redundancy and reliability  Virtualization of Core provides a cost-effective, minimized overhead, management of business critical systems  Classrooms (now fully outfitted), require regular maintenance and upgrades

Why?  Virtualization of servers allows the district to manage existing systems and grow at a more cost effective rate  Virtual desktops support the vision of the graduate by providing access to curriculum and technology resources outside the classroom  Virtual desktops and servers provide secure access to business critical resources for faculty and staff

Security Recommendations The following overarching recommendations were shared with the Board of Education as a result of the outside safety and security review (Summer, 2013):  Personnel: Address a need for increased personnel to monitor visitor access to school buildings. In addition to personnel for visitor access monitoring, the Farmington Police Department, in collaboration with the Farmington schools, applied for a competitive grant and secured an additional School Resource Officer.  Equipment: Address any enhancements to equipment within schools and on school grounds identified as a result of the security review.  Accessibility: Address the current level of accessibility to schools and school grounds when schools are in session.  School-Based Safe School Committees: Utilize current committee structures to include school-based Safe School Committees that would monitor safety and security measures at each school site.  Cell Phones Coverage: Review and assess cell phone coverage within school buildings.  Outside Use of Schools: Outside groups’ use of school facilities to include information on adherence to safety and security expectations.  Policies: If needed, update any policies related to safety and security recommendations.  State of Connecticut: Monitor the Sandy Hook Advisory’s work and any subsequent legislative action.

Security Upgrades: 2014-2015  Security review was initiated in the 2012-2013 school year with an outside security expert, in collaboration with the Farmington Police Department.  The district will utilize Capital security funding to continue school level security upgrades aligned to the security review recommendations.
