When You Go See a Show

When You Go to See a Show On the front of the building, a big, lighted signboard, known as a MARQUEE, shows what is onstage inside. This is meant to excite audiences and alert them of special performers or performances

When You Go to See a Show Inside the doors of the theatre is the BOX OFFICE. This is where you can buy tickets or pick them up at WILL CALL if you bought them online or over the phone Once a ticket taker has scanned or ripped your ticket, you enter into the lobby where you can sometimes buy souvenir programs, drinks and snacks If you see the lights blink or chimes sounding, it means the show is about to start and you need to get to your seat. This also happens at intermission

When You Go to See a Show The Auditorium (or the house) is where all the seats are and there are different places to sit: Downstairs- all the seats behind the orchestra Upstairs- this can be called the mezzanine or the balcony Box Seats- along the sides of the auditorium, are very fancy little seating areas for small groups, set aside in private balconies facing toward the stage

When You Go to See a Show The show usually starts with an OVERTURE which is a medley (a mix) of all the songs you are about to hear played by the orchestra. This is also the cue to be quiet because the show is starting. Musicals are usually broken into 2 parts called acts. Act 1 is before the intermission and Act 2 is after. Each act is broken down by scene, usually following a particular place in the musical such as on a street or a house. When the place changes, it is called the next scene. (scene 1, scene 2, scene 3…)
