Inequalities MCC7.EE4: Solving and Graphing Inequalities
What is an inequality? A mathematical expression that states two quantities are not equal or may be equal. Ex. 2n + 3 > 9

Inequalities How do we show an inequality in math? By using one of these symbols in place of an “=” sign. Symbols > Greater Than ≥ Greater Than or Equal To < Less Than ≤ Less Than or Equal To

Algebraic Inequality These are inequalities that contain a variable.
Ex: a > 9 or 17 ≤ y A value of the variable that makes the inequality true is a solution of the inequality. An inequality may have more than one solution. Together, all of the solutions are called the solution set.

Graphs of inequalities
You can graph the solutions of an inequality on a number line. If the variable is “greater than” or “less than” a number, then that number is indicated with an open circle.

If the variable is “greater than or equal to” or “less than or equal to” a number, that number is indicated with a closed circle.

a > 9 means that a can be any value greater than 9. But can a be 9? No because 9 is not greater than 9. Therefore when we graph this we use an open whole on our arrow like this: The open whole shows that we are leaving 9 out of our solution because it is not larger than 9.

Write an inequality for each situation:
Writing Inequalities Write an inequality for each situation: There are at least 25 students in the auditorium. Number of students ≥ 25 “At least” means greater than or equal to. No more than 150 people can occupy the room. Room capacity ≤ 150 “No more than” means less than or equal to.
