Keeper By: Mal Peet Date/year published: February 13, 2007 Genre: Realistic Fiction Ryan Nixon Period 2 11/29/12

 The setting for Keeper is in a jungle about 300 miles away from San Juan. It is important because he learns to play soccer in an open field in the jungle. If this was different his life wouldn’t be as exciting because in the jungle he meets people and things that want to make you keep reading. Setting

 El Gato Is a tall skinny boy who loves to play soccer. When the keeper teaches him how to play he becomes huge and buff. He is sometimes frustrated at him self because he cannot play soccer as well as everyone else. As he starts learning soccer he becomes proud of himself for being good at soccer. He is always caring to his family like when he draws pictures for his mom so she wont get let down about what he does in the forest. Characters

 The Keeper is a shadowy man. He is always in the shadow of the trees. He is tall and fast when showing El Gato how to play soccer. He is helpful to El Gato by helping him learn soccer. He is clever by doing things that most people wouldn’t think of to help El Gato learn soccer. He is level-headed by being calm when he is trying to teach El Gato. Characters

 El Gato quits playing soccer in the plaza because he wasn’t very good at that time. When he starts going into the jungle there is a keeper who is going to help him learn how to play soccer. When he turns 15 he cannot go to learn from the keeper because he has to work as a logger. Conflict

 One day El Gato quit to decides quit playing soccer in the plaza, then one day he goes into the jungle and finds an opening with a goal keeper. He goes back every day until he has to work as a logger. Once he becomes a logger he cannot go see the keeper who taught him every thing he knows about soccer. Summary of Plot

 The main theme of keeper is though an athletics determination and hardworking efforts they can overcome any challenge that comes at them. The keeper is making El Gato push himself to the extreme of his thoughts and feelings. The keeper makes El Gato big and buff in just two years. He was mentally tough to stay playing even know he was hurting bad. Theme

 Keeper by Mal Peet is told in 1 st person By El Gato. He probably choose this point of view so that it would catch El Gato’s life. If It was told in a different point of view it would sound right about El Gato’s life. It wouldn’t catch your attention as if it was in 1 st person. Point of View

 The keeper is acting like something significant is going to happen soon. He is trying to give him more information then had ever done before. It affects the story by helping the reader understand what is going to happen later in his life. Symbolism

 I would recommend this book to all ages. My dad and my sister read part of it and liked it. The whole is just mind blowing with action and adventures that El Gato travels on. It also shows all of the troubles he faced when he was a kid to when he was an adult. Recommendation
