2 What sports and other activities do you participate in? What kinds of food do you eat? What kind of people do you spend time with? Your answers to these questions reflect your total health. Health is a combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being.

3 These 3 parts of your health work together to build good overall health.

4 When you are taking care of your health triangle and all 3 sides are balanced, wellness is achieved. Wellness is a state of well-being, or total health You can improve your wellness by developing good health habits. A habit is a pattern of behavior that you follow almost without thinking

5 Good health habits include: Choosing healthy foods Participating in regular physical activity Learning how to handle stress Getting along with others

8 Self-concept Each of us has a different self-concept Your self-concept is the view you have of yourself Your self-concept starts forming when you are very young. Many factors influence your self-concept: – Parents – Teachers – Friends

9 Self-concept It may or may not mirror the way other people see you Having a positive self- concept is an important part of good mental/emotional health

10 Self-esteem Your self-esteem is a measure of how much you like and respect yourself Your self-esteem is closely related to your self- concept Having a positive self-concept will help you build a high level of self-esteem

11 What’s the difference? Self-concept is how you SEE yourself or how you THINK others see you Self-esteem is how you FEEL about yourself

12 Developing a Positive Self-Concept Have confidence in yourself and your abilities Accept encouragement Set a goal and work to reach it Develop realistic expectations (no one is perfect) Find friends that support and encourage you Avoid worrying about hurtful remarks or looks. Put them behind you and MOVE ON!!!
