Academic Senate General Education Committee

Members College of Agriculture – Kimberley Miller College of Business – Jeanne Almaraz – Gerd Welke College of Education and Integrated Studies – Hend Gilli-Elewy College of Engineering – Seema Shah-Fairbank – Ali Sharbat College of Environmental Design – Felix Barreto College of Letters, Arts and Social Science – Kent Dickson (Joined Mid Oct.) – Mahmood Ibrahim (Chair) – David Kopplin (Senator) College of Science – Don Hoyt – Jodye Selco Related Areas – Wendolyn Vermeer Administration Liaison – Claudia Pinter-Lucke

General Education Referral (GE-008-134 REF) Design a 48 semester unit GE Subject Area Distribution model aligned with the breadth requirements in Article 4 of CSU Executive Order (EO) 1065. (Note: Include the requirements of EO 1061 within GE) Update the instruction requirements for each GE Subarea to be consistent with the requirements in Article 4 of EO 1065. Align the GE Program Learning Outcomes approved last year by the Senate with the GE Subareas to ensure that students have the opportunity to develop all the approved learning outcomes as they complete the GE breadth requirements. Expand the ECO template to include sections that address the specific requirements of GE courses, in order to provide guidance to departments as they develop GE course proposals.

What steps did the GE Committee take? Read EO 1065 and EO 1061 carefully Looked at what other CSU campuses were doing regarding GE Asked faculty in each CPP college about preferences regarding 48 unit GE or other total

Humanities: Literature, Philosophy, Languages ( other than English) Area D - Social Sciences12 Area E - Lifelong Learning and Self-Development3

What did the GE Committee find? Current CPP language has moved away from the original language of EO 1065 and has restricted course offerings. Research about other CSUs: – Some campuses include EO 1061 within GE – GE requirement and EO 1061 requirements may be fulfilled by a variety of courses (students have options) – Some CSU campuses offer 2+1 semester units in Physical and Life Science to be satisfied with 12 units of coursework.

General Education Committee Proposal for General Education: Develops a plan that would allow for some students to achieve a 48 Unit GE minimum (include EO 1061 requirements.) Cleans up existing General Education Language found in the Curriculum Guide Chapter 3.Curriculum Guide Chapter 3. Includes more specific language from Executive Order 1065 in the revised definitions of GE areas and sub- areas.Executive Order 1065 Provides GE definitions that will be broad and inclusive to encourage the development of multiple opportunities and options for our students.

Summary of Results Student Learning Outcomes – All General Education courses are tagged specific student learning outcomes that course proposers will need to address. Area A – No significant change Area B – Changes associated with designation and unit increase Area C – No significant change, but unit increase Area D – Changes associated with designation and unit reduction Area E – No significant change Upper Division Synthesis – No significant change

EXAMPLE Student Learning Outcomes Areas - A1, A2, A3, B5, C3, C4, D3 and E – SLO Ia: Write and speak effectively to various audiences. Areas – A1, A2, E – SLO – IVa: Analyze the behavior of individuals in relationship to the social and natural environment, human sexuality, nutrition, health, stress, family, aging, and death. Course proposers must address listed SLOs

Changes to Subareas

Area B Increase of 1 semester unit in Area B Current: Many courses in B1 and B2 are at least 3-quarter units + a 1-unit lab Proposed: There must be some course offerings in B1 and B2 that will include a 2-semester-unit lecture and a 1-unit lab.

GE Language – Area B Current: AREA B - Mathematics and Natural Sciences Proposed: AREA B – Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning

GE Language – Area B Current: Area B (minimum of 18 quarter units) B1: Physical Science B2: Biological Sciences B4: Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning B5: Science and Technology Synthesis Proposed: AREA B (minimum 12 semester units) B1: Physical Sciences (minimum 3 units) B2: Life Sciences (minimum 3 units) B4: Quantitative Reasoning (minimum 3 units) B5: Science and Technology Synthesis (upper division, 3 units)

Area D Reduction of 1.33 semester units in Area D Area D Proposed (12 semester units) D1: History, Society, and the Individual (3 or 6 units) D2: Political and Economic Systems and Global Perspectives (3 or 6 units) D3: Social Science Synthesis (upper division, 3 units)

Current Area D summary D1: HST 202, PLS 201 (8 quarter units) D2: History, Economics, & Political Science (4 units) D3: Sociology, Anthropology, Ethnic and Gender Studies (4 units) D4: Social Science Synthesis (upper division) (4 units)

Area D and EO 1061 All CSUs must comply with EO 1061, which requires that students study: – R1. The historical development of American institutions and ideals – R2. The Constitution of the United States – R3. The Constitution of the State of California (EO 1061 imposes requirements that are unique and independent of EO 1065 but which MAY be satisfied within GE)

Proposals made to GE Committee Regarding Area D D1 – HST 202 and other courses that will be developed to meet EO 1061 (R1) D2 – PLS 201 and other courses that will be developed to meet EO 1061 (R2) D3 – Combine courses in current D2 and D3 D4 – Social Science Synthesis Require at least three prefixes

Alternative Proposals Regarding Area D D1: EO 1061(3 units) – Cover all requirements in one course D2: History, Economics, & Political Science (3 units) D3: Sociology, Anthropology, Ethnic and Gender Studies (3 units) D4: Social Science Synthesis (upper division) (3 units)

CPP GE Committee Conclusions 1.Our campus is too large to be so limited by single courses to meet EO 1061 requirements 2.With the majority of colleges strongly supporting a 48-unit GE program, it was necessary to find a way to get to 48 units 3.There may potentially be other courses developed that would fulfill EO 1061

Sacramento State American Institutions This requirement may be fulfilled by completing one Government and one US History course from the following list. The courses below also satisfy Area D units. In addition, students have the option of taking challenges in US History, US Constitution and California State and Local Government. For details on challenges exam, see http://www.csus.edu/ccr/Challenge%20Exams/. http://www.csus.edu/ccr/Challenge%20Exams/ US History – (3) HIST 15H + Major Problems in U.S. HistoryHIST 15H – (3) HIST 17A + U.S. History: 1607-1877HIST 17A – (3) HIST 17B+ U.S. History: 1877 to the PresentHIST 17B – (3) HIST 159 History of U.S. Foreign RelationsHIST 159 – (3) HIST 161 The American VisionHIST 161 – (3) HIST 162 Social History of the U.S.HIST 162 – (3) HIST 167 History of American WomenHIST 167 – (3) HIST 177 + The African-American Experience 1603 to the PresentHIST 177 – (3) HIST 182 American WestHIST 182 US Constitution and CA Government – (3) GOVT 1 Essentials of GovernmentGOVT 1 – (3) GOVT 113 American Political ThoughtGOVT 113 – (3) GOVT 150 American GovernmentsGOVT 150 CA Government (California State and Local Government does not meet the U.S. Constitution requirement included in other government courses listed above but may be used by students who have taken a U.S. Constitution course outside of California. It fulfills the state and local government requirement only). – (3) GOVT 180 California State and Local GovernmentGOVT 180

Feedback on Area D Proposal Comment: Opposed to the change to D, we should increase units from 48 to 51 units. Taking away a social science class makes us a technical school, not a polytechnic. Suggestions: – Collapse area B (1065 mandates 9 lower division units) – Cross-list courses that meet area E (i.e. Fullerton and Stanislaus) Comment: Final Area D proposal offers new faculty the opportunity to develop collaborative classes, think creatively and out of the box courses.

Feedback on Area D Proposal Comment: Advising will be a challenge, since students have requirements that are not directly linked to a specific GE area. Comment: Why not take the EO 1061 requirements outside of General Education. Committee Response: In reality this would be at total of 9 units that students would be required to take outside of the general education. Thus the committee believes that a proposal showing this would be less favored.

Feedback on Area D Proposal Comment: Concern that a student could meet the history requirement without ever taking a class taught by a historian. Comment: EO 1061 states that students could take a test to meet the requirements

Feedback on Increasing Units Comment: Though it would be nice to have more courses, within limited resources it is not practical to increase units. This will affect the accreditation process of several departments. Comment: Currently we take 68 units, which is 40% of our quarter units. The Proposed 48 units will be 40% of 120 semester units. If we let the percentage go over 40, we're approaching a BA instead of a BS. Faculty and Department Chairs in several colleges expressed the strong need for a 48-unit GE to allow maximum units put toward their specific degree requirements, due to accreditation and overall competitive preparation of students

Feedback on course units Comment: Some courses, such as Calculus 1 and Math for future teachers will be 4 units not 3 units.

Feedback on Laboratory Courses Comment: Will laboratory courses be submitted separately.

Feedback on Course Sequences Comment: Can course proposer submit a sequence of courses that meet certain general education requirements.

Feedback on Student Learning Outcomes Comment: Concerned that all courses in C1 cannot meet the SLO IVb, which involves imparting knowledge about the “physiological” and “psychological” development of those practicing or experiencing the visual and performing arts.

Feedback on ECO Templates Comment: How will courses proposers know how to develop their courses and ECOs.
