PHASE 1 Research: Gathering Information
2
ACTIVE READING Evaluating Articles
3
Preparing the Article Once you have located your needed information you must do the following: Print a copy of it so you could write on it: Photocopy your needed pages if it’s a chapter in a book or a magazine article. (You will need money for this.) Print out a computerized source. Create a Works Cited card for the article/reading Different sources (on-line, print, DVD) have different needs, but basic info needed is: Author. Title. City: Publisher, Publication Year. Source Type.
4
Annotating Read and annotate every paragraph of the articles you select. Top margin: Write your focus question/s Left margin: give a phrase or one sentence summary Right margin: for relevant sections, include comments, insights, questions, analysis. How does the information fit your topic? Bottom margin: write a two sentence evaluation of the article. Why is it believable or not? How is the information different from others? Is the source reliable?
5
USING THE CORNELL NOTE SYSTEM FOR ACCURATE NOTE-TAKING FOR SOURCES. Formatting Research Based Note Cards
6
Some Basic Rules of Organization 1.Only write on lined side! a.Identify source in left column b.Put 1 (one) main idea in the middle column 2.Give the card a unique name (a cue word for the topic contained in the quote) 3.Put the parenthetical citation at the end of the quote or paraphrase. 4.Avoid LONG quotes and paraphrases!
7
Sample Note Cards: What they look like! SourceUnique Title Author or Title“Quotation” (author’s last name page) Or Paraphrase (author’s last name page) Or “Quotation” and Paraphrase combined (author’s last name page)
8
Sample Note Cards: Paraphrase SourceRich/Poor Social Division Irene Miller “Divided We Eat” Magazine Article (P) Rich Americans can afford to buy fresh produce year round while poorer Americans have to eat what they can afford – high calorie, mass-produced and high fat fast foods that are cheaper in the discount grocery stores (Miller 45).
9
Sample Note Cards: Direct Quote SourceSocio-economic disparity Irene Miller “Divided We Eat” Magazine Article (Q)“According to... British epidemiologist Kate Picket, obesity rates are highest in economic developed countries with the greatest income disparities” (Miller 45-46).
10
Sample Note Cards: With Paraphrase and Quote SourceImpact on US Public Health Irene Miller “Divided We Eat” Magazine Article (Q) Miller reports that “America is among the most obese of nations; Japan, with its relatively low income inequality, is the thinnest” (Miller 46) (P/Q) Miller reports that one of the heaviest nations around is America while “Japan, with its relatively low income inequality, is the thinnest” (Miller 46).
11
Observations...Format 1. Each card has a title. 2. The source’s Author and Title are included. 3. The page number is included. 4. (P) is put on card for Paraphrase 5. (Q) is put on card for full or partial Quotes.
12
Observations...Info 5. Titles reflect the meaning of the quote or paraphrase NOT the topic of the research. 6. The parenthetical citation is on the card to assist the writer when he/she compiles the sentence that will include the information. 7. There is only one idea from one source on the card.
13
PRACTICE TIME! Directions: 1. Using our class article as practice to: 2. 2. Make a Works Cited Card for that article. 3. Choose a quotes that might be important ideas to be included in a student paper. 4. Make a note card for that quote. 5. Do this with all of your articles.
14
Remember... The purpose of this note-taking system is to provide organized information that can later be sorted to form research facts (CDs) for paragraphs in the student paper. It is critical to put only ONE (1) idea per card! If the quotes or paraphrase are multiple sentences, they will make the task confusing and more challenging in the writing task.
15
QUESTIONS? DO NOT GUESS! Ask questions. Ms. Culp or a peer who seems to grasp the format concept can help! Again, this system can make the writing of the paper an easier experience. It is a tried and tested process. Protect your note cards! Losing them can make life difficult. Keep them in a safe place and band or clip them together in sets for easier use.
