Bloom’s Taxonomy for The Giver

Purpose Through Bloom’s Taxonomy, you will be challenged to use higher order thinking skills such as applying and forming connections, synthesizing and comparing, and evaluating the text.

Goal To discover not only what you comprehend but also what the author wants you to know.

Knowledge At the conclusion of chapter 12, the Giver helps Jonas understand the concept of color. What does Jonas receive?

Possible Answers Page 96

Comprehension At the beginning of chapter 13, Jonas is angry. Why? How is his anger resolved?

Possible Answers He only sees color in an instant—a flash. He realizes that sameness keeps him from making distinctions in color. However, his frustration is never resolved, p.97.

Application If Gabriel were to make a wrong choice if choosing a red toy over a blue toy, how would this apply when Gabriel would make adult decisions?

Possible Answers Jonas, having been protected from making choices all of his life, felt that people need to be safe, never take risks in life. We grow and learn from making both right and wrong choices, p.98.

Analysis Jonas, having been protected from making choices all of his life, felt that people need to be safe. On page 100, Jonas is given the painful memory of an elephant being killed. Why does it benefit us to learn about the bad things in history?

Possible Answers History has a tendency to repeat itself.
We can learn from the bad events and change the situation to decrease the chance that it will happen again. Never take risks in life. We grow and learn from making both right and wrong choices p.98.

Synthesis The Committee of Elders seldom asks the Receiver of Memory for advice. Propose why they would not ask. Why does the Receiver want to give advice. How would he advise them?

Possible Answers The Receiver of Memory may want to have the Committee of Elders make a mistake or two, so that they can learn from it on their own; also because he says that life is so orderly, predictable, painless, p.103

Evaluation Judge why Jonas questions the Giver’s statements about the brain. Evaluate why you think Jonas needs pain to become the new Receiver of Memory.

Possible Answers He does not yet understand the fullness of his calling. Once he has the pain, he’ll gain wisdom and experience. Without pain, there is no joy. This is why Jonas wants to escape. p.107

Exit Slip If you could carve a perfect society out of the one we live in today-- \What would you eliminate? What would you keep?
