SSN Smart Energy Network Utility Operation Smart Grid Devices Residential Devices C&I Devices Seamlessly connect all people and devices that generate, distribute or use energy

Example Distribution Use Cases

Distribution Use Cases - Better, Faster Information Imagine having near real-time visibility to information and health of your distribution system. Warning of customers in violation of operating contract (i.e. power factor, harmonic distortion) Manage customer generation - operating and planning for grid management Feeder cap bank and transformer tap switching – monitor and adjust based on actual loading and voltages Feeder switching – load models with actual data, predict loading and suggest switching Replay Outages System Efficiency and Loss Analysis – Measure in real-time instead of annual calculations based on assumptions CBM – on going health monitoring and notification Outage, voltage, power quality event analysis

Foundation for the Smart Grid

Our Approach to Smart Grid Goals –Real time data access –Scalable to millions of devices –Easy and fast to implement –Maintainable/Standards Based General Approach –PI calls UIQ web services to initiate transactions –UIQ pushes data to PI via JMS –Use SAP use cases as a guide

Example Use Cases Example 1: Device Provisioning –Meter is disconnected over the network –Upon status change, an instantaneous register read is performed by UIQ –UIQ pushes read results with switch status to queue Example 2: Transformer Outage –Multiple Last Gasps are pushed from meters to UIQ ODS –UIQ ODS pushes event to JMS Queue –PI recognizes events, compares to network model and notifies OMS that transformer is out Example 3: Single Out, Ping to Verify –Last Gasp pushed from meter to UtilityIQ ODS –UIQ ODS pushes event to JMS Queue –PI recognizes event and calls UIQ web service to ping the neighboring meters on the transformer to confirm scope of outage –Ping results are pushed from UIQ to JMS Queue
