Designed by Johannes-Scharrer-Gymnasium Germany THE HUBBLE-SPACE-TELESCOPE
2
MAIN INFORMATION Size Length: 43.5 ft (13.2 m) Weight: 24,500 lb (11,110 kg) Maximum Diameter: 14 ft (4.2 m) o Hubble´s name: Named after Erwin Hubble (1889—1953) confirmed an "expanding" universe => Provided the foundation for the Big Bang theory. o Speed: 28000 km/h => 97 min to complete one orbit
3
HISTORY Who had the idea to built a space telescope? It was Lyman Spitzer (1914-1997) In 1946 Spitzer proposed the development of a large, space-based telescope Start of the telescop e on 24 th April, 1990 Difficulties at the beginning Pictures were blurry because Hubble's primary mirror had a flaw called "spherical aberration” On December 2, 1993 astronauts corrected the mistake
4
HISTORY End of the telescop It was planned for the year 2010 But maintance works was rescheduled => Now end of the telescope probably in 2014 Successor of the Hubble space telescope : James Webb Space Telescope

CONSTUCTION
6
CONSTRUCTION Optics Way of the light
7
CONSTRUCTION Optics the primary mirror
8
CONSTRUCTION instruments For example: Wide field camera 3 Installed 2009 Made for natural light Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph acts somewhat like a prism separating light from the cosmos into its component colors
9
CONSTRUCTION cover Here : Data transmission For example: antennas for the communication
10
JOBS For example: Observation of cepheides
11
RESULTS OF THE TELESCOPE The Hubble Deep Field image of a small region in the constellation Ursa Major Picture was taken between December 18 and December 28, 1995 For example:
