4. Build Background This story is set in the 1930’s when the U.S. suffered through the economic crisis known as “The Great Depression”. Thousands of people lost their jobs, and banks and businesses closed all over the country.

5. Background Children enjoyed the Sunday “funny papers”, four hour matinees, and radio programs. They also collected trading cards that featured heroes of movies and sports.

6. Betrayed To harm or be disloyal to a country or another person by helping an enemy or giving information that is confidential ◦ He betrayed his country!

7. Contempt A powerful feeling of dislike toward somebody or something ◦ He was held in contempt to the court.

8. Divulge To reveal information, especially information that was previously secret ◦ He divulged secrets to the French government.

9. Dwindle To decrease little by little in size, number, or intensity and approach zero, or make something decrease in this way ◦ The sun dwindled into the horizon.

10. Incredulous Unable or unwilling to believe something ◦ His story was incredulous.

11. Indignant Angry or annoyed at the apparent unfairness or unreasonableness of something ◦ My sister was indignant when I threw her cat.

12. lethargy a state of physical slowness and mental dullness resulting from tiredness or disease ◦ He seemed lethargic during his speech.

13. Stalemate A situation with no potential winners. ◦ The chess match ended in a stalemate.
