2. The New National Curriculum The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics reason mathematically can solve problems by applying their mathematics

3. The New National Curriculum o There are ‘domains’, or strands, i.e. Number, Measurement, Geometry and Statistics. The Number and Geometry strands are divided further. NB: There is no separate ‘using and applying’ strand- this is incorporated in the other strands, as in the Foundation Stage. o The current Y4 children will be tested on the new curriculum when they are in Y6, so we have started to implement the curriculum earlier than other schools.

4. The New National Curriculum What are the main changes? Age related expectations (Not levels) Raised expectations By the end of Y2, know no. bonds to 20 and be precise in using and understanding place value By the end of Year 4, pupils should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 multiplication table… By the end of Year 6, pupils should be fluent in written methods for all four operations, including long multiplication and division, and in working with fractions, decimals and percentages.

The New National Curriculum There is a particular increase in expectations regarding fractions and decimals –e.g. fractions – –In Y3, ‘add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole’ –In Y5, ‘multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers..’ –In Y6 ‘multiply pairs of proper fractions…’ There is also an emphasis on knowing multiplication tables and being fluent in using number facts

6. The New National Curriculum We will continue to focus on language, always encouraging children to use correct mathematical vocabulary and to explain their thinking using thinking frames: I notice that…… Is that because….? It is similar to… What if…? I wonder if…… I think ……. because

7. Calculation Progression Our calculation policy has been devised to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014 for the teaching and learning of mathematics. It was agreed by all teaching staff during a Teacher Development day in February 2014. It is incorporated within our assessment document and is organised according to the age related expectations set out in the National Curriculum 2014.

8. Calculation Progression The policy can be found on the school website. It clearly shows progression through the year groups of the 4 operations of +,-, x and ÷. The activities in the hall demonstrate the progression.
