HIDROCIENCIAS MODEL TO ESTIMATE THE AERIAL FOREST BIOMASS BY REMOTE SENSING IN THE CHIAPAS STATE. Marcos Casiano Domínguez Director: Fernando Paz Pellat Asesores: Rene Valdez Gregorio Ángeles DOCTORADO EN HIDROCIENCIAS New Jersey, USA, September 2009

HIDROCIENCIAS In the scheme for adaptation of any model for carbon accounting, there are two modules of data input that are still not solved for Mexico. The estimation of forest biomass (Growth curves, Vol. to biom. Conversion) The effect of the disturbances in the forest biomass (Disturbance events & transition rules, Harvesting & other disturb. Schedule). Introduction Background Given the experience of the GRENASER (Colegio de Postgraduados), these two modules can be approached of indirect form by Remote Sensing (Optical segment); nevertheless, in the south-west of Mexico, we have a problem because there are high concentration cloud, so the accuracy in the estimation of aerial forest biomass by this means is poor. On the other hands, in México exist high heterogeneity of plants in each ecosystem

HIDROCIENCIAS According to literature, there are indirect methods to measuring the aerial forest biomass in tropical forest and it transformation to total biomass by means RADAR technology; nevertheless, the use of this technology is almost null even though represents a high potential of advantage in the South-west of Mexico. HIDROCIENCIAS The objectives for this investigation are: GENERAL OBJETIVE: To prove the technology RADAR like a reliable tool in the estimation of aerial forest biomass of tropical zones (high cloudiness) SPECIFIC OBJETIVES 1.To generate an Aerial Forest Biomass Estimation Model (RADAR-MEBFA, acronym in Spanish) for zones with high cloudiness, using data RADAR imagery. 2.To calibrate the RADAR-MEBFA using fixed points in the Chiapas State. 3.Estimate the Carbon forest in the main ecosystems of the Chiapas State. 4.To Consider the changes of carbon forest in the main ecosystems of the Chiapas State, associated to the processes of changes in the vegetal cover and land uses during period 1984-2009.
