1 MOON CHARTS DUE. - Turn in Review/Finish Sun-Earth System Monday, April 6, 2015

2 Sun- Earth System -- Motions of the Sun link Motions of the Sun *Why does the sun rise in the southeast and set in southwest in winter? (lower in the sky) At that point in our orbit around the sun, we (Missouri) are tilted away from the sun. Fewer daylight hours are an effect of this. *Why does the sun rise in northeast and set in northwest in summer? (but higher in the sky) At that point in our orbit around the sun, we (Missouri) are tilted toward the sun. More daylight hours are an effect / result of this. *Why is the sun never directly overhead the United States? We are north of the equator. http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/sunearth.htmlhttp://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/sunearth.html day and night map, under “sun and moon”

3 *Changes in number of hours of sunlight, time and location of sunrise/set throughout the year -Caused by the TILT of the Earth AND the position in the revolution (orbit) around the Sun. Winter- lower in sky- south of equator, less intense, tilt (away from sun), travels southeast to southwest (BUT the Earth is actually closest to the Sun in Winter because of the shape of orbit.) Summer - higher in sky - but still not directly overhead- north of the equator but still south of us- more intense, tilt (toward sun) Fall and Spring = number of daylight hours and darkness hours are more equal (Autumnal Equinox / Vernal Equinox)

4 Consider these terms: ●Tilt- causes the change in amount of sunlight (winter/summer) ●Seasons- caused by the tilt of Earth AND its position in its orbit around the Sun. ●Ellipse → path Earth takes around the sun, not circle
