5.  The spinning of Earth on its axis is called its rotation. (1 rotation equals 24 hours, so 1 rotation = _______ )  We experience day and night because as the Earth spins, part of the Earth is facing toward the Sun, and part is facing away from the Sun.  The orbit of earth around the sun is called its revolution. 6.  We experience seasons because the Earth’s axis is tilted as it revolves around the sun, so different parts of the planet get different amounts of sunlight at different times of the year. Sunlight strikes the Earth most directly at the equator.  An equinox occurs when a place on earth experiences equal amounts of daylight and darkness. (12 hours each )  A solstice occurs when the sun reaches its greatest distance north or south of the equator each year.
