Bologna Process—45 nations. U.S.—Lincoln Commission, National Foreign Language Initiative, Department of Education Commission on Future of Higher Education.

3 IIE Open Doors Data (2006) 205,983 U.S. students abroad, up 8% Increase of non-English speaking countries (15/20 most popular destinations) China now # 8 destination, up 35%. Small colleges send highest percentages abroad (40+%). 56% short term, 38% semester, 6% year Goucher College – graduation requirement

4 Typology of International Education Studying the World—courses, lectures, films, art, foreign students and scholars… Studying International XYZ—e.g. international business major based on U.S. classroom study only. Studying International XYZ—e.g. with virtual travel, distance education, joint teaching…

5 Typology of International Education Study Abroad—short term and faculty led. Part of the major but usually elective. Custom Study Abroad—one student at a foreign university—credits pre-arranged. Integrated Study Abroad—part of the major, e.g. language majors. One or two terms. Dual, Joint, or Combination Degree. Degree Abroad.

Primarily one term study abroad.

9 Transatlantic Degree Grants: Undergraduate or Masters Four years of funding. $408,000 and 408.000 EUR. 24 EU and 24 U.S. students. $12,000 mobility stipend for a full acad. year. $60,000 admin. costs + $60,000 faculty travel. Consortium = 1 U.S. + 2 EU schools. No cost sharing required.

10 Excellence in Mobility Grants Institutional Memoranda on credits, tuition, and fees. Full Curriculum Description Evaluation plan (inputs and outputs) Students ready to go in year one or two Minimum one full academic term abroad

11 Excellence in Mobility Grants Four years of funding. $180,000 and 180.000 EUR. 24 EU and 245 U.S. students. $5,000 stipend per student for a full acad. term. $30,000 admin. costs + $30,000 faculty travel. Consortium = 2 EU + 2 U.S. schools. No cost sharing required.

12 Policy Oriented Measures Focus on transatlantic policy studies of value to large numbers of institutions. Two years of funding—total $50,000 + 50.000 EUR. Consortium = 2 EU + 2 U.S. schools. No cost sharing required.
