Figurative language is language that goes beyond the literal, dictionary meaning of the words. Some examples of figurative language are called figures of speech. Writers use figures of speech to help create pictures in their readers’ minds. In this lesson, you will learn about two figures of speech: simile and metaphor.
Metaphor compares two things that are not alike and without using the words “like” or “as”
Example: The cat’s eyes were fiery coals in the dark.

The Pilot
 A flying fish is an ocean pilot,
