2
Explain this pedigree
3
In sex-linked traits only females can be carriers.
4
What disease do you think is displayed from this pedigree?
6
Core & Honors Vocabulary What is an autosomal trait?
7
Answer Autosomal: Pertaining to a chromosome that is not a sex chromosome.chromosome People normally have 22 pairs of autosomes (44 autosomes) in each cell together with two sex chromosomes (X and Y in the male and XX in the female).malefemale
8
Core & Honors Vocabulary Based on the pedigree below, is the disease sex linked (X-Linked), or autosomal? Why?
9
Answer
10
Core & Honors Vocabulary What best describes Huntington’s Disease? A)Sex-Linked (X-Linked) Dominant B)Autosomal Recessive C)Sex-Linked (X-Linked) Recessive D)Autosomal Dominant
11
Answer HUNTINGTON’S DISEASE – A genetic disorder that is caused by an autosomal dominant allele. Every one who inherits the allele develops Huntington’s disease and has a 50% chance of passing it on to offspring. Symptoms do not develop until a person is over 30 (late onset). Death is caused by the gradual breakdown of cells in the brain.
12
Core & Honors Vocabulary When alleles for different characteristics are on separate chromosomes, they are distributed to gametes separately. This is known as: ________________________________________
13
Answer When alleles for different characteristics are on separate chromosomes, they are distributed to gametes separately. This is known as: The Law of Independent Assortment *Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment - The alleles of the many different genes present in any given (diploid) organism segregate/assort from one another in a random fashion (see dihybrid cross)Law of Independent Assortment
14
Vocabulary Which sets of gametes can come from an individual with the genotype: AaNn
15
Answer AaNn
16
Core & Honors Vocabulary What is it called where an allele of a gene separates from each other during meiosis?
17
Answer What is it called where an allele of a gene separates from each other during meiosis? Mendel’s Law of Segregation
18
Core & Honors Vocabulary When two alleles for a gene cause a blended phenotype, this is called: ___________________
19
Answer When two alleles for a gene cause a blended phenotype, this is called: Incomplete Dominance
20
Vocabulary When one allele/genes affects multiple traits on the phenotype, it is called: ____________________
21
Answer When one allele/genes affects multiple traits on the phenotype, it is called: Pleiotropy Pleiotropy – the ability of one gene to affect an organism in many ways.
22
Core & Honors Vocabulary When multiple pairs of genes determine a trait, it is called: __________________________________
23
Answer When multiple pairs of genes determine a trait, it is called: Polygenic Inheritance
24
Core & Honors Vocabulary When two different alleles for a trait are both expressed, it is called: ________________
25
Answer When two different alleles for a trait are both expressed, it is called: codominance
