MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES KNOWING AND USING YOUR LEARNING STYLE

On a sheet of paper, list as many things as you can think of that can be done with a piece of paper (school appropriate, please ).

Fold it Write on it Draw a picture Play hangman Make a paper airplane Crumple it into a ball and throw it Write a poem on it Make a list on it Write a note to a friend Step on it Tear it Use it for origami Make a target and spit balls out of it Roll it into a tube and look through it Do homework on it Solve a math problem on it Give it to a friend who doesn’t have any Write a short story on it Light a fire with it Compose a song or write lyrics on it Keep crinkling it up and rubbing the pieces together until it’s really soft and then use it as a tissue

GARDNER’S DEFINITION OF INTELLIGENCE: “The ability to solve problems, create products, and/or provide services that the community values.” Based on this definition, there are eight different kinds of “intelligences,” also known as “learning styles.”

LINGUISTIC LEARNER - "THE WORD PLAYER" Likes: Reading Writing Telling Stories Playing Word Games, Etc.

LOGICAL / MATHEMATICAL LEARNER - "THE QUESTIONER" Likes: Working with numbers Asking questions Solving problems Experimenting Noticing patterns, etc.

SPATIAL LEARNER - "THE VISUALIZER" Likes: Drawing Designing Building Creating Imagining

MUSICAL LEARNER - "THE MUSIC LOVER" Likes: Singing Playing instruments Listening to and creating music

BODILY/KINESTHETIC LEARNER - "THE MOVER" Likes: Physical activity Sports Dancing Acting

INTERPERSONAL LEARNER - "THE SOCIALIZER" Likes: Talking to people Being in groups Knowing and being friends with LOTS of people

INTRAPERSONAL LEARNER - "THE INDIVIDUAL" Likes: Working alone Pursuing personal interests Having his/her space

NATURALIST INTELLIGENCE – “THE EXPLORER” Likes: Outdoors Hiking and exploring Plants and animals

Refer to the Eight Styles of Learning found on the back of the “Pathways to Learning” Inventory. How could you now categorize the actions discussed earlier that could be done with a piece of paper? Name at least one action for each learning style.

CATEGORIZE THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE ACCORDING TO THEIR PROBABLE LEARNING STYLES. (SOME MAY FIT MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY): Jane Goodall Amadeus Mozart Albert Einstein William Shakespeare Martin Luther King, Jr. Emily Dickinson LeBron James Mother Theresa

WHAT IS YOUR LEARNING STYLE? After totaling each box on the “Pathways to Learning” Inventory, list your TOP TWO OR THREE Learning Styles on a sheet of paper. Beside each, list two to three STUDY techniques that would demonstrate your use of that Learning Style. (Refer to the “Learns Best By” column on the “Eight Styles of Learning” handout found on the opposite side of the inventory.)
