Utensils- small kitchen tools Mixing Utensils o Mixing bowls- hold ingredients that you mix o Pastry blenders- cut shortening into flour for piecrusts and biscuits o Wire whisks- beating and blending o Mixing spoons- used to combine ingredients o Plastic or rubber scraper- used to scrape bowls or mix ingredients o Sifters- sift and mix dry ingredients together o Rotary beaters- used to beat eggs and mix thin batters Measuring Utensils o Dry measuring cups (1/4 c, 1/3 c, ½ c, 1 c) o Liquid measuring cups (4 cups, 2 cups, and 1 cup- have mL on them) o Measuring spoons ( ¼ tsp. ½ tsp. 1 tsp and 1 tablespoon) o Good to be dishwasher and microwave safe

Cutting and Chopping Utensils o Pairing knives- good for peeling fruits and vegetables o Utility knives- all purpose knives for cutting and slicing foods o Chef’s knives- cutting, mincing, and dicing o Bread knives- slicing bread or baked goods

Other Kitchen Utensils o Cutting boards-base for cutting work o Graters- shred and grate cheese and veggies o Kitchen Shears- cut pastry, veggies, poultry, and meat o Peelers- peel veggies and fruits o Colanders- used to drain foods o Strainers- strain liquids from food o Slotted spoons- helpful lifting solids from liquid o Spatulas- used for leveling dry ingredients o Turners- wide spatulas used to lift and turn foods o Tongs- grasp or hold foods o Ladles- serve hot soups or stews o Cooling racks- allow air to circulate around hot baked products

Some have covers Cake pans- different shapes, used to bake many foods Loaf pans- different sizes, used for breads and meat loaves Casseroles- deep enough to hold main-dish; different shapes and sizes Skillets- shallow and long handles Baking Sheets- most often used for baking cookies Pie pans- sloping sides and round Muffin pans- 6-12 individual cups Custard cups- made from heatproof glass

Toaster- holds slices of bread Blender- push-button speed control for mixing and chopping Hand-held mixer- used for whipping ingredients Food processer- cutting and mixing tasks ( different blades and disks) Electric skillet- fry, roast, simmer, bake; temp. on handle to regulate cooking Before buying a small appliance, find out how often you will use it and if it is worth the cost. Comparison shop-brands, safety features, warranties Look for the UL- (Underwriters Laboratories) lets you know it is safe to use Some are immersible- safe to put underwater ( electrical unit is sealed so no water can enter)If you don’t see that term, do not stick the appliance in water
