Goals If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, You’ll End Up Somewhere Else
2
If you don’t set yourself goals, you are adrift and at the mercy of the goals that other people set for you.
3
Most people aim at nothing in life and hit it with amazing accuracy
4
Why goal-setting works: There is magic in your brain Reticular Activating System
5
Keys to Activating Your Reticular Activating System Write down your goals (and look at them often) Make SMART goals: S = Specific M = Measurable A = Action–oriented R = Realistic T = Timely
6
On being specific and measurable: A goal must be both, or it is merely a wish “I will be rich someday” is a wish. “I will make $150,000 a year by the time I’m 28” is a goal “I want to lose weight” is a wish. “I will lose 20 pounds by Christmas” is a goal
7
Another hint: The best goals are stated in the positive: Not “I will ‘try’ to stop biting my fingernails,” but “I will grow my fingernails out” Not “I will stop smoking,” or “I will not smoke,” but I will take good care of my lungs. (In the first two examples, “stop” and “not” are negative)
8
Types of Goals Short-Term:Short-Term: Usually accomplished in a few days or weeks. Example: I’m going to get a great grade on my first health test Long-Term:Long-Term: Accomplished over time – usually months or years. Example: I will travel to 14 countries by the time I’m 25
9
It’s easier to meet goals if you break them into small steps: Example: Possible steps for becoming a veterinarian: Step 1: Do well in all science and math courses Step 2: Keep overall GPA high Step 3: Research the profession; take skills/interest inventories in the Career Center to be sure it’s a good fit Step 4: Find volunteer work at the humane society, zoo, a veterinary office or pet store Step 5: Research colleges Step 6: Apply for scholarships Step 7: Apply to three veterinary schools
