Logic of intervention Identify specific needs in small-scale agriculture to adequately promote and support traditional food productions in the Balkans and Turkey desk research on relevant law and policy processes in each country field research on endangered food and agricultural products Advocacy, to influence public policies on agriculture, rural development and food sector Grassroots projects, to preserve endangered food and products (Ark of taste and Presidia) Raising awareness among decisions makers, so to promote a sustainable rural development model; among citizens, so to impact their daily food choices;

F IELD RESEARCH THEMES …SSFs rely on preserved food biodiversity (animal breeds, varieties), and on traditional knowledge (processing methods and techniques). …such as? We have engaged in a huge mapping of each country territory to identify what are the existing food heritages that are facing extinction. We will do so through the tools provided by Slow Food: 1.The Ark of Taste; 2.Slow Food Presidia;

T HE A RK OF T ASTE is a catalogue of exceptional gastronomic products in danger of disappearing, with specific rules and regulations; Everyone is entitled to submit applications, which are then considered, discussed, and approved by an International commission; Today there are over 2,000 registered products;

ESSEDRA FIELD RESEARCH How we carried it out? It was carried by each partner in each of the 8 targeted countries Either directly or outsourced Carried out 2013-14 What products we searched for? Endangered varieties, breeds, and techniques; It is not complete yet, as each partner focus on its own field of expertise and area of expertise; analysed history, culture, and the environment, to highlight differences (for those products which have similar names);

Slow Food Presidia Presidia are grassroots projects designed to concretely sustain quality production at risk of extinction; The Presidia’s primary goals are to: improve product quality and producers’ ability to judge product quality; develop associations, technical capabilities, and skills to facilitate the promotion and sale of products; Today there are over 400 Presidia worldwide, with over 10,000 farmers involved;
