10. What are synthetic dyes?  Synthetic dyes (colors) were originally made from coal tar oil. Today, they’re made from petroleum (crude oil), just like gasoline.  Petroleum is also used to make artificial flavorings, preservatives, plastic, medicine, pesticides and fragrances.
