The Nose Knows Mini Lab Materials 4 Dum Dums A clock or phone timer Paper for recording observations

9 1. Partner #1: Close your eyes and pinch your nose shut with your fingers. 2. Partner #2: Select a candy, but do not tell the subject the flavor. 3. Partner #1: Open your eyes--but keep your nose pinched shut! 4. Partner #2: Begin a 60-second countdown. At the same time, ask the volunteer to describe the sensations he or she is experiencing. Record. 5. Partner #2: Try and identify the flavor of the candy. 6. After 60 seconds, again ask partner #1 the sensations in his or her mouth, and again ask him or her to identify the flavor of the candy. Record. 7. After you've finished recording the information for step 6, tell partner #1 to open his or her nose and immediately describe any differences in the sensations in his or her mouth. Record these observations in your data table, and then ask the volunteer to identify the flavor of the candy. 8. You may now reveal the true flavor of the candy. Record it on the sheet of paper below your data table. 9. Change roles and repeat the activity. Directions: The Nose Knows
