How to evaluate an scholarly journal 14

Journal Impact Factor IF has been the most important criteria for evaluating an scholarly journal. IF is calculated only for journals indexed in ISI Web of Sciences. The database contains the Journal Impact Factors is Journal Citation Report (JCR). 15

Journal Impact Factor The average citations to the articles published in a journal in the study year during 2 preceding years of that journal received citations in overall ISI indexed journals. 16

Impact Factor Calculation Citations in the current JCR year to articles published in the previous two years divided by the number of articles published in the previous two years. Citations in 2007 to articles published in 2005 + 2006 IF= Total 2005 + 2006 Papers 17

How to find Journal Impact Factor Journal Impact Factors are calculated and released annually by one of the most important and usefull ISI databases called Journal Citation Report. 18

ScienceDirect Search Techniques 45

Truncation An aster allows you to search by a root word. If you type in Behav* the search would include words such as: behave, behavioral, behaviour, etc. 46

Wildcard ? A question mark replaces a character anywhere in a word, except the first character. To search for both woman and women simultaneously, you could enter Wom?n 47

Plurals & Phrases Plurals  horse and horses  woman and women  case and cases Searching Phrases  double quotes “ ” 48

Alternative spellings & Synonyms English and American spellings  behaviour and behavior  flavour and flavor  colour and color  psychoanalyse and psychoanalyze Synonyms  Aspirin will also search acetylsalicylic acid 49

Connectors You can use ScienceDirect connectors or operator to search for more than one word in a single search: AND OR AND NOT 50

Boolean Operators Shaded areas indicate retrieval Search Statement Types of records retrieved stress AND anxiety Documents that have both stress AND anxiety stress OR anxiety Documents that have either stress OR anxiety stress AND NOT anxiety Documents that have stress but NOT anxiety 51

Connectors If you don't include a connector, AND will be automatically inserted between your search terms. If you use more than one connector, ScienceDirect interprets the search according to the order of precedence. 52

ScienceDirect Types of Alerts Search Alert Tells you when a stored search retrieves new results. Topic Alert Tells you when new articles pertaining to a specific topic are available on ScienceDirect. Journal alert (New Issue Alert OR TOC Alert) Tells you when new issues of your chosen journals are available. 53

DOI Digital Object Identifier (DOI) A digital unique code for each object www.doi.org Resolve this DOI: doi:10.1016/j.beha.2010.05.005 54
