2 Intelligent Transportation Society of America www.itsa.org Over 40,000 fatalities, 2.7 million injuries each year, economic cost exceeding $230 billion Congestion estimated to cost the economy nearly $200 billion annually; the average rush-hour commuter spends nearly a full work week stuck in traffic 28% of greenhouse gases attributed to transportation Estimated cost of needed infrastructure investment ranges from $225 – $340 billion per year, current gas tax-based funding system insufficient to meet needs Significant Transportation Challenges

3 Intelligent Transportation Society of America www.itsa.org What ITS Can Do to Help ITS technologies are available today that can: –Prevent accidents before they happen –Provide more effective incident, emergency response –Reduce traffic congestion and provide real-time traffic and traveler information –reduce energy use and emissions –enable innovative financing including VMT user fees Next transportation bill must make better use of available technologies and innovative solutions

5 Intelligent Transportation Society of America www.itsa.org Fiscal Stimulus Package Total investment of $787 billion Approximately $46 billion for transportation, majority for other projects including energy, health care, broadband Strong focus on “ready to go” infrastructure projects ITS America advocated for ITS investment that will create short-term economic stimulus and provide lasting productivity, safety, environmental benefits Final bill signed in February States and metropolitan areas in the process of allocating funding
