Fall of the Roman Empire (in the West) 1.Bad Leadership Emperors after Augustus Caesar stopped listening to the Senate and started ruling single- handedly 2.Invasions from neighbors Generals fighting each other Army guarding borders but getting weak and small in number Germanic tribes coming invading Roman boarders Huns, Goths Vandal, Franks… 3.Financial Problems Value of Roman Money Decreasing Values and morals (stealing, bribing, etc) 4.Food Shortages, Unemployment, Riots, Crime and other Civil Unrest 5.Empire Size and Splitting of the empire Diocletian The East and The West Constantine Constantinople Byzantine Empire Population decreased, schools closed, taxes and prices soared, leaving Romans poor and the empire slowly collapsed.

A New Eastern Empire in Constantinople Even though the Roman Empire in the West was falling, the Byzantine Empire in the East was thriving. Diocletian left the empire to Constantine, who moved the capital and renamed it Constantinople. Justinian became Emperor after Constantine. Justinian had a wife named Theodora. –Retake the old Roman Empire –Law (Justinian’s Code) –Church (spoke Greek not Latin and though Christian it was referred to as Eastern Orthodox Christianity) –After Justinian’s death, the Eastern Empire begin to decline and is eventually taken over by the Ottoman Turks.
