Special Interest Items MODIS Winds: –Nearly all NWP centers now using MODIS winds operationally include: ECMWF, UKMET, CMC, JMA, FNMOC, DWD, NCEP (later this year) –Since June 2004, OSDPD/SSD has been routinely generating Terra & Aqua MODIS IR cloud-drift and WV winds Very reliable, robustVery reliable, robust Distribution of product files in BUFR on a ftp serverDistribution of product files in BUFR on a ftp server Upstream dependencies do currently existUpstream dependencies do currently exist –NASA ground system processing –CIMSS server that provides composite imagery over polar regions that serves as input to the winds processing software –Recent OSDPD/SSD MODIS Wind Processing Enhancements Create MODIS composite imagery over polar regions and serve up on a local server (In final testing)Create MODIS composite imagery over polar regions and serve up on a local server (In final testing) –Eliminates dependency on CIMSS server –Anticipate possible reduction in latency of MODIS wind products GTS distribution of MODIS wind products scheduled to begin Sept 19, 2005GTS distribution of MODIS wind products scheduled to begin Sept 19, 2005
9
Special Interest Items (Cont’d) MODIS Winds (cont’d) –CIMSS has been successful at generating MODIS winds using direct broadcast MODIS data MODIS winds software was implemented at McMurdo, Antarctica Significantly reduces latency of MODIS wind products from 3-5 hrs to ~ 2 hrs CONOPS for such a processing configuration is still TBD GOES Shortwave (3.9um) Cloud-Drift Winds –Distribution to AWIPS already occurring –GTS distribution is expected to begin very soon
