Chapter PreviewChapter Preview O’Brien explains to Winston that Room 101 is a person’s individual personal Hell. And what exactly would be the worst thing for Winston to be exposed to? Rats? Yeah, rats…O’Brien thretens Winston by showing him a cage of rats just waiting to feast on Winston’s face. Winston is utterly terrified, and just shots “do it to Julia!” O’Brien is officially satisfied. No more secret/mental loyalty = only party loyalty to Big Brother.

Chapter PreiewChapter Preiew Winston has finally been “reformed” and now spends his time at the Chestnut Tree Café, drinking gin and playing chess. He is not the same person he was before, and is now very concerned over the current battles being fought in Africa. He remembers seeing Julia at one point; she has also changed and her face has been scarred...hmm…They agreed that torture works and agreed to meet again but nothing happens. He remembers a family memory and wonders if it’s false while listening to the telescreen and accepting the propaganda. He has an epiphany in the last line of the novel when he looks up at the telescreen and realizes that he loves big brother.

They did not matter so long as one knew them for what they were.” “…the long-hoped-for bullet was entering his brain…He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.”
