Matter is classified by its chemical and physical properties.
3
Physical Property: a condition or quality of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Color Texture Odor (smell) Size Shape Any metric measurement (mass, volume, temperature, pressure, etc.)
4
Density Conductivity Boiling point Melting point Malleability Ductility Magnetism
5
Physical Change: a change in the appearance of a substance in which the identity does not change. An easily reversed change Changes in: shape, size, mass, volume, temperature, pressure, etc. Changes in state of matter: SolidLiquidGas Melting Vaporizing / Boiling Subliming Condensing Freezing Depositing
6
Chemical Property: a condition or quality of a substance that can be only observed when it changes into a different substance. Reactivity Stability Flammability Toxicity
7
Chemical Change: a change of a substance into a different substance with different properties, the identity does change. Cannot be reversed 5 evidences of a chemical change: Color change New odor (smell) Release of energy as heat or light Gas produced, seen as bubbles in a liquid Formation of a precipitate (solid formed from 2 liquids), seen as “cloudiness” in a liquid.
