“A NEW DANGER TO AFRICANS” By Darren Myers
2
WHAT’S TO COME? What is the new danger? Where is the danger coming from? What creature is the danger coming from? Is there any way to stop this danger?
3
MALARIA What is Malaria? An infectious disease transmitted to humans by female mosquitos Symptoms include fever and headache and can lead to coma or death Flickr
4
MADAGASCAR Surveys/Tests “10% of the people they(the researchers) tested who had vivax malaria were “Duffy-negative,” meaning they lack the Duffy proteins on the surface of their red blood cells to which vivax malaria parasites attach.”...confusing? EVOLVING! People that were Duffy-negative were thought to be nearly immune to malaria 95% of Africans are Duffy-negative
5
2 MAJOR TYPES OF MALARIA Vivax Malaria Not as lethal as Falciparum Malaria Harder to cure Falciparum Malaria Caused by a different parasite Not affected by Duffy proteins Kills about 650,000 people per year, mostly in Africa
6
FEARS COMING INTO REALITY Is vivax evolving into a falciparum-like parasites? From research: No obvious mutations or abnormalities.
7
KEY POINTS 1.Malaria is transmitted via mosquitos. 2.Key research is being conducted in Madagascar. 3.The most violent form of malaria kills about 650,000 people per year. 4.95% of Africans are Duffy-negative due to sickle-cell anemia. 5.Vivax malaria is not as lethal but is much harder to cure then falciparum malaria.
