Nature vs. Nurture debate NATURE- a product of the genes, a genetically inherited predisposition NUTURE- a learned pattern of behaviour acquired through reinforcement, imitation of the behaviour of others and general environmental influences INTERACTION-combination of influences

Traits Trait theory states that we have primary traits and secondary traits E.g. Primary trait – Extrovert Secondary traits – Adventurous, confident, sociable, enthusiastic

The ego will release the desire of the id. Often this will result in an undesired response if the superego fails as a mechanism of control. The superego inhibits our basic intentions, and this can be developed to bring about productive and desirable behaviour in sport

There are 2 different approaches to the use of personality profiling in sport

Sceptical Approach This questions the link between personality and sports performance

Credulous Approach This supports the links between sports performance and a particular personality type.
