Pre- History People were hunter-gathers and moved place to place in order to survive – Tools of wood, bone and stone – Learned to make fire 10,000 years ago people began the NEOLITHIC REVOLUTION – Developed the first agriculture Settled permanently near rivers to grow crops – Domesticated animals – Many different cultures developed all around the same time in different places

Neolithic Revolution People settled permanently near rivers Farming created a surplus of food The food surplus gave people the ability to become specialized workers Civilizations/ cities created the need for laws and government officials Specialized workers and extra time created the opportunity to advance technology and inventions

Societal Needs People need protection and leadership so governments form Laws are needed to maintain order Records keep track of taxes and other information – Also records history Government officials are a specialized job

Mesopotamia Developed on the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers Several city-states – Hammurabi ruled over Babylon Created a strict set of written rules called Hammurabi’s Code Hammurabi’s Code is very vengeful – An eye for an eye – Drown your wife for cheating
