A SWOT Analysis looks at the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that are relevant to an organization in a new venture. ICEL - UNIT I2

6 SWOT Analysis A powerful technique for identifying Strengths and Weaknesses, and for examining the Opportunities & Threats you face. Used in a personal context, it assists you to develop your career in a way that takes best gain of your abilities and opportunities. ICEL - UNIT I6

7 Strengths How can you maximize your strengths and put them into use? Do you have a desire to learn a particular thing, like dancing, trading, new technologies Could this be strength? Yes, the desire alone is strength. ICEL - UNIT I7

8 Strengths What advantages (for example, skills, education or connections) do you have that others don't have? What do you do better than anyone else? What personal resources do you have access to? What do other people (and your boss in particular) see as your strengths? ICEL - UNIT I8

9 Consider this from your own perspective + from the point of view of the people around you. And don't be modest; be as objective as you can. ICEL - UNIT I9

10 Strengths Can include –academic strengths - certain academic area –social, emotional –interpersonal strengths - effective communication skills. –success in hands-on learning activities, creativity –a positive attitude toward learning. ICEL - UNIT I10

11 In looking at your strengths, think about them in relation to the people around you Example - if you're a great mathematician & the people around you are great at math, then this is not likely to be a strength in your current role, it is likely to be a need. ICEL - UNIT I11

12 WEAKNESS You need to be truth to yourself here, if you are serious about making any substantial progress. There is a popular saying that the first step to solving a problem is to accept that the problem exist. Could your weakness be laziness? Or lack of patient to see your progress? Or Lack of self discipline etc. ICEL - UNIT I12

13 Weaknesses What could you improve? What should you avoid? What things are the people around you likely to see as weaknesses? Again, think this from a personal & external basis: Do other people perceive weaknesses that you do not see? Do co-worker constantly out-perform you in key areas? It is best to be realistic now, and face any unpleasant truths as soon as possible. ICEL - UNIT I13

16 Opportunities Where are good opportunities facing you? What are exciting trends you are aware of? Useful opportunities can come from : Changes in technology, markets Changes in govt policy related to your field; Changes in social patterns, population profiles, lifestyle changes, etc.; or Local Events ICEL - UNIT I16

17 A useful approach to looking at chance is also to look at your strengths and ask over yourself whether these open up any chance. Alternatively, look at your weaknesses and ask yourself whether you could open up opportunities by eliminating them. ICEL - UNIT I17

18 Opportunities Opportunities are possibilities that are open to a student so he can try to make the most of strengths and minimize difficulties resulting from weaknesses. They could include strategies to utilize learning style preferences or interests to maximum advantage or ways to incorporate things that motivate and engage to maintain greater focus. 19 Threats What are the things you feel could be a threat to you? Is it the fear of failure? Or lack of required skills? Or lack of required financial resources? ICEL - UNIT I19

20 Threats What obstacles do you face? What are the people around you doing? Is your job (or claim for the things you do) changing? Is changing technology threatening your spot? Can any of your weaknesses badly threaten you? Carrying out this analysis will be illuminating - both in terms of pointing out what needs to be done, and in putting problems into perspective. 21 Threats Bullies, problems getting along with a teacher or anything that makes the you feel embarrassed, sensitive or threatened could be included in this area. It also could include factors that might make you feel less motivated, such as certain subjects or other external conditions. ICEL - UNIT I21

22 Importance Helps to set attainable short-term and long-term goals Helps to become more responsible for and attentive to his own learning and development. it can assist you & reveal chances that you are well placed to take advantage of. ICEL - UNIT I22

23 QUICK RECAP Strengths enable you to put your best foot forward. Weaknesses - Who does not have them? Only when you recognize them can you do something to correct them. Opportunities - plenty-even in adversity. Only one has to evaluate them for what they are. Threats - ticking time bombs; defuse them by anticipating and taking preventive action. ICEL - UNIT I23
