Since the beginning of School Lunch, the intent… Was to safeguard our children’s health and well being

Nutrition Guidelines for Food & Beverages Food & beverage sold to students on campus during school day should meet regulations for: School meal standards Smart Snacking in schools

Alabama State Department of Education Healthy Snack Standards remain in place, except where USDA standards are more restrictive

Any snack food sold in schools should mover towards: Be “whole grain rich” grain – OR Have as first ingredient a fruit, a vegetable, a dairy product, or a protein food OR

Any food sold in schools should mover towards: Contain 10% of the DV of one to the following nutrients: calcium, potassium, vitamin D, or dietary fiber OR Be a combination food that contains at least ¼ cup of fruit and/or vegetable

Smart Snack Standards Entrée items exempt from new standards if part of a reimbursable meal Entrée item may be sold a la carte on same day, and day after sold as part of reimbursable meal

Nutritional Requirements Calorie limits: Snack items: ≤ 200 cal Entrée items: ≤ 350 cal* Sodium Limits: Snack items: ≤230 mg Entrée items: ≤ 480 mg* *Exempt from standard if part of reimbursable meal, day of and day after

Nutritional Requirements Sugar limits: ≤ 35% of weight from total sugars in food Fat limits: Total fat ≤ 35% calories Saturated fat < 10% Trans fat- 0 grams

Offer Vs ServeServed Must offer 4 Items from 3 Components 3 MUST be taken This can be: Grains Fruit/Vegetable/Juice Milk Additional item 3 Items from 3 Components MUST be served May serve more items if desired This must be: 1 milk 1 fruit 1 grain (optional meat, meat alternative after daily grain met)

Meal Pattern Changes SY 2014-14 Breakfast – 1 cup fruit required for all age grade groups ½ cup fruit must be taken for a reimbursable meal

Fruits (Breakfast) No more than half of fruit may be 100% fruit juice Minimum of 1/8 cup serving can count towards the 1 cup fruit requirement A daily serving must be offered at breakfast – At breakfast only, vegetables may be offered in place of fruits First 2 cups/week must come from dark green, red/orange, beans and peas, or other vegetable subgroups

Grains (Breakfast & Lunch) Offer the daily and weekly serving ranges of grains at breakfast Must offer one 1 ounce Grain equivalent first Schools may substitute meat/meat alternate for grains once daily grains minimum is met

SBP Requirements Effective SY 2014-2015 All grains must be whole grain rich Can be 100% whole grain OR 50% or more whole grain as first ingredient on label AND Remaining 50% is enriched grains May include grain not whole grain, but can’t credit in meal pattern but have to include in nutrient analysis No maximum servings of grains No separate meat/meat alternative component
