2. The History Of Nottingham. Nottingham began in the 6th century as a small Saxon settlement called Snotta inga ham. The Saxon word ham meant village. The word inga meant 'belonging to' and Snotta was a man. In 1067 William the Conqueror built a wooden castle to guard Nottingham. (It was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century). Nottingham grew rapidly after the Norman Conquest. In the 12th and 13th centuries there was also a Jewish community in Nottingham. However all Jews were forced to leave England in 1290. In 1155 the king gave Nottingham a charter. Nottingham gained its first mayor in 1284. The town gained its first sheriff in 1449.

7. The Doomsday Book.  The Doomsday Book was the record of the great survey of England completed in 1086, executed for William I of England. The survey was similar to a census by a government of today. William needed information about the country he had just conquered so he could administer it. While spending Christmas of 1085 in Gloucester, William "had deep speech with his counsellors and sent men all over England to each shire... to find out... what or how much each landholder had in land and livestock, and what it was worth."
