Basic Puritan Beliefs and Characteristics Calvinism- Predestination decided by omnipotent God Education for all Hard work – Material success was a sign from God that you could be one of the chosen Wanted the Church of England to be organized in line according to scripture

Puritan Problems… Self-Righteousness led to double standard of “sins” for non-believers – “City on a hill…the eyes of the people are upon us” Uneven application of laws Narrow-mindedness Scapegoating- witchcraft trials – Trials led to reform for separation of church and state No dancing, music

Basic Quaker Beliefs and Characteristics Direction relationship with God Practical, not formal education Pacifism No oaths Martyrdom Minimalist Belief in equality Opposition to slavery Tolerant No formal doctrines, theological statements or ceremonies Wide, regional movement from Europe Repentance

Quaker Problems… No central authority Pacifism led to people taking advantage of them – Native American raids on settlements No public institutions Repressed by Puritans
