Today we will use HOMOGRAPHS to determine the meaning of words. determine= figure out What will we use today? What does determine mean? What will we determine today? What are we going to do today?

Raise your hand if… You have ever taken a trip somewhere. You have ever seen someone trip on their shoelaces or something on the floor. So you know that the word “trip” can mean two things.

Homographs: words which are spelled the same but have different meanings Example: I went on a trip to Hawaii. “Trip” in this sentence means to go somewhere. Tie your shoelaces, or you will trip. “Trip” in this sentence means to fall over something. The word “trip” is a homograph because it was two meanings but it’s spelled the same. What is a homograph? Why is “trip” a homograph?

Homographs Pool A table game where you shoot balls into pockets. A place for swimming.

Homographs School A large group of fish. A place for learning.

Homographs Ruler A tool used for measuring length. A king or queen.

Homographs Pitcher A container for liquids. The baseball player who pitches the ball.

Homographs Block A cube-shaped toy used for building. The section of a neighborhood.

How to use homographs: Read the sentence. Think: “What is the sentence about?” Look at the homograph definition. Choose and write the best homograph for the sentence.
