How to answer the Credit 2008 ‘Option Question’

In your answer you must have a clear structure which uses relevant and appropriate source material to answer this question well.

What is the question? Option evaluating questions will ask you to pick one of two options or choices and then give 3 detailed reasons why you made that choice. [3 x 2 = 6 marks] They will also ask you why you rejected the other option and to give 2 detailed reasons why you did. [2 x 2 = 4 marks]

You might get a question like the next one. There is a lot to do but be calm and think. Do not try it at the moment.

There are two people hoping to be selected by the Liberal Democratic Party to be the Party’s candidate at the next General Election. Here are extracts from their speeches. SOURCE I EXTRACT FROM CAMPAIGN SPEECH BY KIRSTY REID  I support the proposed wind farm as it will provide many local jobs and help the local environment.  Our local schools provide an excellent education. If selected, I will work to ensure this continues.  Women make up over half the country's population and yet there are still very few of us who are MPs. This is a major priority for local party members and is an important reason why I should be the candidate.  The local economy has been in decline recently. We need more jobs to keep our young people in the area. The new quarry will help with this, and I will work hard to see that it is allowed to go ahead.  To attract more people to the area and we need to improve transport links. I will make this a priority. SOURCE 2 EXTRACT FROM CAMPAIGN SPEECH BY ROBBIE MCKAY  Tourism is very important to the area and so I will oppose the new wind farm as it will be an ugly blot on the landscape and deter tourists.  Crime in Gleninch is among the worst in Scotland. I will campaign to improve policing in the area.  Although new jobs are important, local Liberal Democrats are much more concerned about the environment. The new quarry will put more heavy lorries on our roads which are already more dangerous than the rest of the country. I will oppose it going ahead.  The issue of health will be one of my main concerns, just as it is for local party members.  Compared to the rest of the country, the people of Gleninch are not well-off. I will do all I can to improve this. Use only the information about Gleninch and Sources 1 and 2. 1)State which person would be the more suitable to be selected by the Liberal Democratic Party as their candidate for this constituency at the next General Election. 2)Give three detailed reasons to support your choice. 3)Give two detailed reasons why you rejected the other candidate. In your answer, you must relate information about the constituency to the information about the two candidates. (Enquiry Skills, 10 marks) Study the Background Information about Gleninch and Sources 1 and 2, then answer the question which follows. BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT GLENINCH CONSTITUENCY Gleninch is a constituency in the north of Scotland with a population of 35,265 people. It is a largely rural area with only one town, Inverinch, and a large number of scattered villages. The traditional industries of farming and fishing have been in decline in recent years. The unemployment rate is well above the national average. Many young people leave the area, moving to the big cities throughout the UK to look for jobs or to attend college or university. Tourism is very important to the local economy, with a lot of people employed in hotels, bed and breakfast accomodation and restaurants. Tourists tend to visit the area for a few days on short breaks, attracted by rare wildlife and spectacular, unspoilt scenery. However, there are a number of transport problems in the constituency, including high petrol prices and poor public transport. There is a proposal to build a wind farm in the area. This would involve the construction of 6 large wind turbines along the coast, as well as a 15-mile long power line built on tall pylons to take electricity to the rest of the country. This would create a few temporary construction jobs but will disturb local wildlife and impact on the scenery of the area. An American mining company wants to build a huge “Super-Quarry” into a mountainside near Gleninch. This will produce crushed rock to build roads, railways and houses throughout the UK. The new quarry will create 150 new jobs in Gleninch. At the last General Election, the constituency was won by the Labour Party with a majority of just over 1000 votes. The Liberal Democrats came second. They are convinced that, with the right candidate, they can win the seat at the next election. 6 How should you tackle this question?

First of all ….. Do not be fooled by the question. You can look at all the information, compare the options and decide on one BUT

Just pick ONE You can just pick one of the choices or options and do it. Both will have enough information for your choice to be correct.

Just Pick One Party Candidate [2008] Kirsty Reid OR Robbie McKay

Highlighters Use a GREEN highlighter to highlight the correct information that supports your choice. Use a RED highlighter to highlight the wrong information that rejects the one you did not choose.

Linking Remember to link any sources to the information you are given. This information may be written, statistics or graphs. You can draw lines on your question paper between your highlighted bits and the correct information to help you do this.

Linking Kirsty Reid … I support the quarry it gives 150 jobs … Info on Gleninch Gleninch is in the north of Scotland. Local people want the new quarry which gives 150 jobs. Kirsty says …. which links to the info on Gleninch which says …. making her my choice.

How you should tackle this question. 1.Work on the ‘reasons to support’ first. 2.Work on the ‘reasons to reject’ second. 3.‘Prove what you say’ with detailed information and statistics from the sources.

Make sure your answer is ‘in detail’.

In detail 1.Each reason will be worth 2 marks. 2.You must give at least 2 different pieces of written information, statistics, information from a table, graph, map for each reason for a really good answer. 3.This is ‘in detail’. 4.Write each reason as a separate paragraph so the marker can easily mark what you have done. 5.  3 x 2 [support] = 6 marks 6.  2 x 2 [reject] = 4 marks 7.Overall 10 out of 10.

Now try the question.

Remember just pick Kirsty. Look at each part of her speech in turn and work out if it is correct or wrong. First of all look at what Kirsty says about the Wind Farm. Now compare what she says about the Wind Farm to the information about the Wind Farm in the ‘Background Information about Gleninch’. Is she correct or wrong?

You can use Kirsty Reid wanting to improve transport to support her as she is correct in what she says.

Kirsty says she would work to allow the improve transport links to encourage even more tourists. She is correct as the written information on Gleninch says that tourism is very important to the local area. She is correct as the written information shows that there are transport problems of high petrol prices and poor public transport in Gleninch. A well written answer with a lot of detailed information and statistics well worth 2 marks. Well done. Now write your answer about Kirsty and transport and tourists.

Now you must look at Robbie Mckay and find two reasons to reject him. Find 2 things he says that are wrong. Copy the following table and try to fill it in.

From Robbie Mackay’s Speech.. Correct / Wrong Why Oppose Wind Farm / deter tourists. Crime worst / improve policing. Oppose quarry as roads dangerous. And local LDs more concerned about environment. Health a concern for local party members People not well-off, will improve this
