Scientific Input Management AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT, GUJARAT
2
Scientific Input Management contribute to a valuable framework for a future Sustainable Agriculture MULTI-DIMENSIONAL APPROACH
3
SOIL & WATER : ISSUES Need for paradigm shift in land husbandry and Principles and practices for soil and water management EFFECTS ISSUES & CHALLENGES - Ingress of Salinity - Temperature variation - Arid/ Semi arid region - Mono and Intensive cropping - Exhaustive uptake of nutrients - Low C:N ratio - Erratic Rainfall - Excess withdrawal of ground water - More inputs required - Yield reduction - Degradation of soil texture & structure - Higher cost of production
4
SOIL & WATER : ACHIEVEMENTS Combined use of all the resources to nourish the plant Salinity Management Prevention of Salinity ingress (2421 recharging structure, 2.19 lakh RMT Salinity prevention structure, Soil health management in 30,000 Ha.) Soil amendment material distribution : 78000 HA. Soil Health Annual analysis capacity of 15.00 lakh soil sample 42 STL equipped with micro nutrient testing facility (4-5 lakh samples per annum) (Analysis work in double shift) 42.39 lakhs soil sample analyzed and distributed Soil Health related Online advisory service (e- kiran) Water Management More than 5 lakh ha. covered under MIS Additional incentives on MIS in low water table area Electricity Connection to MIS Beneficiaries on priority basis Promotion of Mulching and improved agronomical practices Large scale programme for water harvesting structure (6424 village ponds, 50641 farm ponds, 9766 Sim talav done by GLDC during 11th FYP
5
SOIL & WATER : FUTURE PLANNING To feed our people, we must first feed our soil To Identify the need base requirement of nutrients… Existing STL will be equipped with micro nutrient testing facility. Facility of leaf tissue analysis in 40 laboratories Laboratory for mapping and atlas preparation of beneficial organism To nourish the soil in sustainable manner… Establishment of large scale combined micro nutrient production unit Establishment of 20 liquid bio fertilizer units in sugar cooperatives Establishment of Bio compost/ phospho compost and Vermi compost unit in all sugar cooperatives To get more crop per drop … Area of horticulture crops will be covered under MIS through more incentives. Construction of water storage devices in canal command areas will be supported with installation of micro irrigation equipment.

MATERIAL INPUT IPM & proper application technique Multifunctional and affordable Balance & Integrated use Qualitative & Suitable verities SEEDFERTILIZER PESTISIDE MECHANIZATION Balance & Integrated use Qualitative & Suitable verities IPM & proper application technique Multifunctional and affordable Intensive agriculture is depends on material input but could be sustainable and could access in easy manner.

INPUT SUPPLY PATH Producer ‘to’ Producer

SEED Seed Security ‘for’ Food Security ISSUES - Low SRR in Groundnut - Insufficient certified seeds - Little emphasis on aspects other than productivity like :-biotic and abiotic factors, Quality, Market acceptability etc. - Low quality and less availability of horticulture planting material ACHIEVEMENTS - Desired SRR achieved in Castor, Cotton, Bajara, Maize, Mustard, Sesame - State Seed Corporation strengthen for more value crops - Bt introduce in popular hybrid varieties (sankar-6, 8) - State Seed Village Programme all and above existing scheme FUTURE PLANNING - Definite varietal replacement plan - Establish State Seed Technology Training Centre - Contract farming policy for quality seed production - Need based research will be emphasized - Encouragement of import of useful germplasm - DNA testing Laboratory - To promote establishment of crop based and region based Nurseries & Tissue Culture Park

FERTILIZER & PESTICIDES To Sustain the health of Soil, Ecosystems and People ISSUES Reliant on imported chemical fertilizer. Limited availability of SSP. Less availability of quality organic manures Low fertilizer use efficiency Excess use of fertilizer Lack of micro nutrient awareness Less adoption of bio fertilizers and bio pesticide. ACHIEVEMENT Establishment of Press mud based Bio compost production unit. 8,250 MT phospho compost distributed Cotton shredder demonstration & Rotavator distribution to burry the crop SSP consumption improved by 140 % & Production capacity enhanced by 50% Improved Fertilizer Use Ratio Village wise Fertility maps displayed at village level. NABL accreditation for Pesticide Laboratory FUTURE PLANNING Conversion of agriculture waste and city compost in organic manure on PPP mode. Bio fertilizer and bio pesticide will be popularized in the field. Incentive for Green manuring and free services of rotavator to burry the crop Laboratory for mapping and atlas preparation of beneficial organism Leaf Tissue Analysis Laboratory
10
FARM MECHANIZATION Integration of Traditional and Scientific Innovations ISSUES Labor crisis Less adoption of hi-tech equipment Less mechanization adoption among small and marginal farmers Low budget for farm mechanization ACHIEVEMENTS Increase budget for farm mechanization: ` 210.00 crores in 2011-12 Agro Service Provider and Custom hiring unit project for Small & marginal farmers Incentives for Hi- tech machineries like Sugarcane harvester/planter, laser land leveler Integrated web based application module FUTURE PLANNING Farm power availability to be raised from 1.6 kW/ha to 2.1 kW/ha. Assistance to innovations of farm machineries Farm machinery mega exhibition support Development of Gender friendly tools
