SUMMER INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE PREPARATION TIMELINE FALL 2013 EXPLORE your options Contact International Programs –Indicate your location of interest –Create a budget including the cost of travel, tuition (if earning credit), VISA, passport, lodging, transportation, meals and personal items –Download application packet at www.kumc.edu/international-programs.htmlwww.kumc.edu/international-programs.html Apply for the experience –Meet with your Academic Advisor (if earning credit) and get advisor signature on the application –Make contact/introduce yourself to the location/ submit application if necessary Apply for your passport –Submit a color copy of your passport to International Programs at internationalelectives@kumc.eduinternationalelectives@kumc.edu SPRING 2014 (4-6 MONTHS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE) Make an appointment with Student Health for immunizations, prophylaxis, etc., and to obtain signature on application. Submit completed International Experience application with all signatures to International Programs at internationalelectives@kumc.eduinternationalelectives@kumc.edu Get your VISA (if applicable) –Submit a color copy to International Programs at internationalelectives@kumc.eduinternationalelectives@kumc.edu Make your travel arrangements –Submit your itinerary to International Programs at internationalelectives@kumc.eduinternationalelectives@kumc.edu 1-4 MONTHS PRIOR TO DEPARTURE Attend one required Health and Safety Meeting Register with Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov/step/https://step.state.gov/step/ Read the Travel Tips specific to your educational experience destination Read the PRE-DEPARTURE SUGGESTIONS Read the PROBLEM SOLVERS Read and travel with the SAFETY ABROAD BROCHURE Sign and submit the Waiver of Liability form Submit Health Insurance information or complete the Lewer Agency Health Insurance form and submit $25 to the Office of International Programs Be sure that all necessary paperwork has been submitted and received by International Programs: –Application –Color copy of your passport –Color copy of your VISA (if applicable) –Emergency Contact Form –Flight and travel itinerary –Waiver of Liability

Spanish and Clinical Opportunities Nicaragua: – Limited number – Applications through Sara Pirtle at UNMC –Spanish immersion; primary & community health in a developing country –PHASE 1 June1- June 29, 2014 Phase II Course Description: This course provides one week of Spanish language review (private instruction) in León at a Spanish bilingual school, followed by three weeks of clinical experience at medical facilities in the León region. Lectures and field trips will supplement the clinical experience. Program Coordinators: Angelina Delgado, MD, MPH; Sara E. Pirtle, MBA and selected members of the medical faculty of UCAN. Ms. Pirtle is the Coordinator of International Health & Medical Education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Delgado is a Nicaraguan primary care physician and the onsite course coordinator. Requirements: Preference is given to students, faculty, and staff of the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Targeted number of participants per course: six to fourteen participants in Phase I; two to six participants in Phase II. Housing: Homestay with a Nicaraguan family. Costs: $2,550 will cover Spanish language instruction, program lectures, homestay with a Nicaraguan family, most meals, airport pickup, housing during field trips, ground transportation, and most miscellaneous program fees. Not included: airfare, meals during the weekends and field trips, required texts, personal expenses, and some miscellaneous costs. IMPORTANT you need to complete the application; If you are going out of the country on ANY program, you need to complete the application; You will need to turn in all of the required documentation; You will need to attend a required Health and Safety meeting offered every second Friday of the month 2-3 pm in Calkins Conference Room, G005 Orr Major.
