Accessibility Accessibility | FOIA | Privacy | Policies and NoticesFOIA Privacy Policies and Notices U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey Lesson 9— Submit Observations Online

Lesson 9 Objectives By the end of this lesson, you will be able to: Recognize the different parts of the Enter Observations page. Explain how to enter site level observations. Explain how to enter observations on plants and animals. Explain how to enter intensity and abundance.

Entering Your Observations The final step in observing is to submit your observations online via your Nature's Notebook account. Select the link to Enter Observations on the right-hand side of your Observation Deck. Select the correct site from the list of sites. Each column below represents one visit’s worth of observations at a site.

Entering Your Observations (Cont.) Enter the date and time of your visit at the top of a column, as well as any additional information (e.g., snow on the ground) from your coversheet. Then for each of your plants and animals, select y, n, or ? for each phenophase.

Entering Your Observations (Cont.) You can report intensity or abundance for any phenophase for which you selected y or ? by selecting a value from the What value? dropdown menu, or entering a number in the How many? box. When you are finished, select the Submit observations button in the lower or upper left corner of the screen.

Editing Your Observations You can edit your observations by visiting your Observation Deck, selecting on Enter Observations, correcting your data and selecting Submit Observations.

Entering Your Observations Select the right arrow, within the image below, to watch a short video (00:04:42) on how to enter your observations. The script for the video is in the slide notes.

Lesson 9 Summary Observations can be entered online via your Observation Deck by selecting on the Enter Observations link on the right-hand side of the screen. The Enter Observations screen includes information similar to the Cover Sheet and the Datasheets, so it should be easy to find where you enter your observations. If you used the mobile app in the field, you will not need to enter observations via this screen—they’ve already been captured. Click on the Yes, No, or ? For each of the phenophases that you observed in the field. You can enter the intensity or abundance of each of the plants animals you observe if you are comfortable making that assessment.
