11 F. BRIDGE TO WRITING 1. Before You Read Read the first sentence in each paragraph of a research report called Mystery in The Jungle . Read them and write one sentence that will tell you what you are going to learn. Continued on the next slide. On Location Grade 12 Unit 3

1. Before You Read In an insect-infested, hot, humid and dense jungle, far away from anywhere with running water, electricity or roads, lie over 16 enormous ancient monuments. The struggles of the journey to get there were the easy part. Who put them there? While there is a lot that remains a mystery, what scientists do know is that the people who lived there over 3,000 years ago were called the Olmec. There is evidence that the Olmec had a good understanding of astronomy and mathematics (based on an accurate calendar system that archeologists found) as well as knowledge of building engineering and written language. However, it is the stone monuments, that attract the most attention. Continue paragraphs 7, 8, 9, and 10 from page 57 in your book. On Location Grade 12 Unit 3

2. Words to Know Read the method for figuring out the meaning of an unfamiliar word in a sentence. Method: If … then …. logic. I make a part of the sentence start with “if” and I think of a logical conclusion and start that conclusion with “then”. The conclusion is the meaning of the unfamiliar word. 14 2. Words to Know Number 1 If nobody saw the criminal break out of jail, then no one knows how he did it. I think mystery means “no one knows”. Number 8 If Nadia divided the price … by her weekly allowance, then she used a mathematical process. I think calculate means “use a mathematical process”. On Location Grade 12 Unit 3

15 2. Words to Know Your ability to write an IF .. THEN … process will not only help you figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word, it will also help you in critical thinking in English and other subjects like Math. It is important that you develop this ability. Write an If … then … process for the unfamiliar words in sentences 2 to 7. Work alone and do as many as you can. Sit in pairs and read each other’s ‘If … then … ’ sentences. If you still need help, form a group of three to four. On Location Grade 12 Unit 3

If the picture shows a person with the globe of the planet earth, then the word to use is geo- I look at the list of words and find ‘geographer’. The best word for the picture is geographer. Now do the same for all the pictures and add the words on the word wall. On Location Grade 12 Unit 3
