Yet, research shows adults tend to think a serious illness will not happen to their family. Annual food safety impacts: 48 million illnesses 128,000 hospitalizations 3,000 deaths Half of all infections are children under 15 years old – that’s millions of sick kids each year!

The Challenge… Recent research confirms consumers do not consistently follow recommended practices, even when observed [UC Davis, Christine Bruhn PhD. Study included observation of burger and salad preparation in people’s homes] 32% did not wash hands directly after handling raw meat Potential cross contamination occurred in 74% of households observed – avg. of 35 per household About 30% of households had a refrigerator that measured at above 41°F 76% of participants said they would not use a thermometer to check if burgers were fully cooked

Learning: Food safety concepts are built into the game, including these practices that reduce risk of food poisoning: importance of hand washing to reducing risk of cross contamination importance of using a food thermometer to measure the internal temperature of hamburgers on the grill importance of keeping perishable foods chilled at 40 °F importance of “keeping a clean scene” including using separate platters for raw hamburgers and for cooked hamburgers
